Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum. Captain Morgan Distillery, Arecibo, Puerto Rico — the world's best-selling spiced rum and the benchmark of the category, blending Caribbean molasses rum aged in charred white oak barrels with a proprietary spice mix of vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove.

Sir Henry Morgan was one of the 17th century's most celebrated privateers — a Welshman who earned a knighthood from King Charles II for his audacious raids on Spanish Caribbean settlements. He later served as Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica, where rum flowed freely and was as essential as currency. Seagram's launched Captain Morgan rum in 1944 under his name, initially distilling it in Jamaica. The brand is now owned by Diageo and produced primarily at their Puerto Rico facility, where it has grown to become the second best-selling spirits brand in the United States.

Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum is built on a base of Caribbean molasses rum aged in charred white oak barrels, which develops the caramel and vanilla foundation before spices are added. The proprietary blend of natural spices — vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove — is what defines the expression and established the template that virtually every other spiced rum has followed since. At 35% ABV, it is lighter than most competitors, deliberately designed for maximum mixability. The 750ml is the standard format for everyday use; the same liquid is available in 1.75L for better value.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Marshmallow, light toffee, and spiced honey. Cinnamon and nutmeg clearly present. Molasses and vanilla with a creamy warmth.
  • Palate: Smooth and molasses-sweet — spiced honey flavor leads with cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and light tropical fruit. Warm spice mid-palate without harshness.
  • Finish: Creamy and warm with a gentle cake-frosting sweetness. Vanilla and light spice linger. Medium length, clean.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum taste like? Marshmallow, light toffee, and spiced honey on the nose with cinnamon and nutmeg. Smooth and molasses-sweet on the palate with vanilla, cinnamon, and light tropical fruit. The finish is creamy and warm with lingering vanilla and gentle spice.
  • What is the difference between Captain Morgan 750ml and 1.75L? Identical liquid — same recipe, same spice blend, same 35% ABV. The 1.75L is a larger format for better value when buying for frequent use or entertaining.
  • What cocktails is Captain Morgan best in? The Captain & Coke is the definitive serve. Also excellent in a Spiced Rum Mule with ginger beer and lime, a Painkiller with pineapple juice and coconut cream, or simply over ice with ginger ale and a lime wedge.
  • Why is Captain Morgan only 35% ABV? The lower proof was a deliberate design choice to maximize mixability — a lighter spirit blends more easily into cocktails without overwhelming other ingredients. Most classic spiced rum cocktails were built around this profile.
  • Who was Captain Morgan? Sir Henry Morgan (1635–1688) was a Welsh privateer who conducted raids on Spanish Caribbean territories with English Crown authorization. He later served as Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica. Seagram's named the rum after him in 1944 when launching their Caribbean spiced rum.
